There are customs that disappear without anyone dismissing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201creal\u201d Black Friday - the one with the physical stores, the endless lines and people waiting for hours on the street - is one of those.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I got to live a little bit of that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just enough to understand what the adrenaline was like to stand in line at 3 AM, talk to strangers while waiting for the doors to open, and watch everyone run straight to electronics when I said \u201cgo\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, all that is history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My first Black Friday in the United States<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It was early in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In those years, some stores opened at 2, 3 or 4 AM, and the scene was always the same: cold, coffee and a bunch of people waiting to get in as soon as the shutters were raised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As soon as they opened, we all started walking fast... and after a few meters it was a straight run to electronics. Two carts at a time, grabbing everything you could before it ran out. Employees were yelling \u201cthere's only a few left!\u201d and watching the stock fly out in seconds. It was fun chaos, with an energy that was hard to explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That day they were giving out numbered \u201cWilly Wonka\u201d type tickets for limited products. I got one for a 75-inch TV. Perfect... except for one detail:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

my car was a Mini Cooper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I asked if they could send it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They told me, \u201cIf you don't take it now, it goes to someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That level of organized madness was part of Black Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today we live differently<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What changed and why it matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Today Walmart and Best Buy open to 6 AM<\/strong> on Black Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No early mornings, no running crowds, no weird strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Retailers changed it for three reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • simpler logistics<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • less chaos<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • consumption moved online<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    <\/div>\n\n\n\n

    What happened to the physical stores?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    In the United States, Black Friday foot traffic has been declining for more than a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Some years fall 2-4%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Cumulatively, more than 40%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And no surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Buying from the phone wins by technical KO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Update 2025: CNBC confirms<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    A recent survey cited by CNBC shows that the Generation Z is the most popular generation for Black Friday shopping<\/strong>, but almost everything does from the cell phone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    More of the 90% plans to buy online, not in physical stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Older generations are also reducing their visits to stores, and Black Friday has become a phenomenon. less universal<\/strong>. The \u201cK-shaped\u201d economy is causing some to spend more and others to cut back hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In other words: the physical Black Friday we knew is no longer the standard. Today the day is experienced from the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What happened to online (in the U.S. and Latin America)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    In the United States, virtually all of the Black Friday growth moved online:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • over 9 billion dollars<\/strong> in digital sales,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • more of the 70%<\/strong> from the cell phone,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • and \u201cBuy Online, Pick Up in Store\u201d as the new standard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      In Latin America the story is different:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Black Friday still has a strong shopping component. on-site<\/strong>, but mobile also dominates. The difference is that, in general, chaos in stores has never been as widespread as in the United States. There it was a tradition; here it is more of a digital campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Today, in both the U.S. and LATAM, the trend is the same:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      more and more decisions are being made on the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      No need to wait in line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It takes a finger (or several).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The signal that really interests me<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The important thing is not whether Black Friday used to be better or worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The important thing is to read the signal behind it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      how habits change when technology simplifies something.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      We saw it in retail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It also happens in tourism, real estate, payments, education, experiences... everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      When a simpler, faster and more convenient option appears, people migrate without looking back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      And that's where the opportunities to build begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I close with this<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      I lived a tiny part of that stage of the physical Black Friday, but it was enough to understand something:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Big changes are not always announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Sometimes they just start to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      And if you want to create, build or undertake, that is the key:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Pay attention before everyone notices.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
